Management Team

The management team has extensive experience in the medical device industry and has a track record in the development, production, and delivery of medical devices to the worldwide marketplace.

Paddy Caffrey, Director & Chairman of the Board.
Paddy Caffrey, former VP and Managing Director of Pfizer Ireland Pharmaceuticals, has over 30 years experience in this industry. He was the president of the Institution of Engineers of Ireland in 2004/2005. He is a former chairman of the Irish branch of ISPE, the international society of pharmaceutical engineering, also a former Chairman of PharmaChemical Ireland. He was a member of IBEC’s national executive council and former Chairman of IBEC Cork Region. He is currently Chairman of the Governing body of Cork Institute of Technology. He is a non-executive director of a number of companies. With his extensive experience and contacts in EnBIO’s target markets he will play a pivotal role in EnBIO’s success.

Dan Philpott, Chief Executive Office/Founder/Director
Dan has wide ranging experience (>15 years) in managing complex, high technology start-ups, having previously held senior positions with Digital Equipment Corporation, Intel Ireland and Johnson & Johnson. More recently he worked as a programme manager with the European Commission, designing and implementing multi-million euro reconstruction and economic aid packages in the Balkans. With Intel he served as a member of the core team which started up Intel’s first European semiconductor plant. He performed a similar role with Johnson & Johnson when it invested in its first Irish medical device fabrication site. He holds a first class Bachelor of Production engineering degree from the University of Limerick and an M.B.A. from the University of Phoenix. He is a chartered engineer with the Institute of Engineers for Ireland. Dan works with EnBIO fulltime.

John O’Donoghue, Chief Technical Officer /Founder/Director
John is the inventor of the FRONTIER™ technology who, on recognising the commercial potential of the invention, assembled the high calibre team to found EnBIO. He was until recently a Principle Engineer with Guidant/Boston Scientific. John is a leading edge innovator, with extensive experience conceptualising and implementing highly effective and efficient technology solutions for the manufacture of complex medical devices. He also has wide-ranging experience in medical device design and associated regulatory requirements  Overall he has over fifteen years experience in the Irish medical device/diagnostic industry having previously worked with Johnson & Johnson and National Medical Care. He holds an honours Mechanical Engineering degree from University College Dublin and a Master’s in Biomedical Engineering from Trinity College Dublin. Mr. O’Donoghue works with EnBIO fulltime.

Vincent Grady, Financial Controller
Vincent has a wealth of relevant experience in the medical device sector complimented with experience in the electronic and environmental industries. He holds an honours Business Studies Degree from the University of Limerick and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Ernst & Young. He has startup experience with Dell Computers when they set up a manufacturing facility in Ireland and also assisted with the Dell startup in Malaysia. He carried out a similar role with Johnson & Johnson when they setup their Vistakon plant in Limerick. His most recent experience is as Financial Controller of the Environmental division of an Irish plc. This division has grown from a turnover of €3 million to in excess of €30million in the past 8 years and was achieved through strong organic growth and strategic acquisition. Vincent works with EnBIO fulltime.

Joe O’Keeffe, Commercial Advisor/Founder/Director
Joe has considerable experience in high-technology start-ups having previously served as CEO of Pentus Technologies and COO of MV Technologies, both Irish start-ups in the Industrial Automation area. He most recently served as COO of NanoComms Limited. Prior to that he was Managing Director of the European arm of Inflow, a US based Data Centre and IT managed Services Company. He has also worked as a Business Development Manager with Motorola in Russia where he was responsible for the set-up of Motorola’s first manufacturing operation in Eastern Europe. He holds a Bachelor of Electronic Engineering from University College Dublin, a M.Sc. in Computer Applications from Dublin City University and an M.B.A. from Dublin City University. Mr. O’Keeffe is a non-executive director of EnBIO.

Professor Eric Masterson, Orthopaedic Surgeon
Eric is one of the leading orthopaedic surgeons in Ireland specialising in reconstructive surgery of the hip and knee, including deformity correction, primary and revision arthoplasty as well as specialising in musculoskeletal oncology. He also has an international research reputation and is the adjunct Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery with the Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Limerick. Professor Masterson is a member of EnBIO’s medical advisory board.

Professor Brian J. Meenan BSc MSc PhD CChem FRSC

Biography
Professor Brian J. Meenan holds the Chair of Biomedical Materials at the University of Ulster and is Head of the Biomaterials & Tissue Engineering Research Group within the Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials Research Institute (NAMRI). He is also Director of University of Ulster Hub of the EPSRC funded Innovation Manufacturing Research Centre (IMRC) MATCH (Multidisciplinary Assessment of Technology Centre for Healthcare) and is a Principle Investigator in the EPSRC Grand Challenge initiative, Regenerative Medicine: A New Industry (Remedi). He is also a lead scientist within NANOTEC Northern Ireland which is an EU funded regional Centre of Excellence established as a collaboration between the University of Ulster, Queen’s University, Belfast and Invest Northern Ireland (INI). Professor Meenan has an extensive record of peer-reviewed publications and research grant income and has active collaborations within the UK, Europe, the USA and Asia. He is a Past President of the UK Society for Biomaterials (UKSB) and immediate past Chairman of the Royal Society of Chemistry Northern Ireland Section. He is currently a member of the Institute for Materials, Minerals and Mining (IoMMM) Biomedical Materials Applications Division Committee, the Royal Society if Chemistry Biomaterials Chemistry Interest Group Committee and is currently a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College.

Professor Meenan’s research interests are directed toward the development of advanced biomaterials for medical device applications with particular emphasis on promoting interactions on the sub-micron to nanometre scale for applications in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Core projects include, studies of bioactive surfaces and reactions thereon; calcium phosphate thin film coatings; modification of polymer surfaces by atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge (DBD); control and medication of cell-surface interactions and the development of new methods for in situ biological process control in a bioreactor environment. Much recent emphasis has focused on the role of nanotechnology for enhancement of in vivo functionality of biomaterials and medical. Professor Meenan also has extensive experience of surface analytical techniques for biomaterial/medical device characterisation.
