Pacemaker

Pulse Generators include devices such as Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) devices (which in turn includes devices such as pacemakers, defibrillators, CRTs), any muscle stimulation device and any neuro stimulation device (such as the Parkinsons Disease and MS devices), i.e. this section applies to any electronic package that is implanted in the body.

All these devices are enclosed in a metal can or shell. The can is typically made of commercial grade titanium. Once an infection is detected the treatment involves immediate removal of the device combined with large doses of antibiotics.

EnBIO's CoBlast™ technology can offer the following competitive advantage functions to Pulse Generator manufacturers:

  • Antibiotic Delivery Surface: Infection is a serious problem for pulse generator implants and it is generally introduced during the implant surgery. Through the CoBlast™ technology EnBIO can offer an antibiotic eluting surface whereby a defined amount of antibiotic (e.g. vancomycin or gentamicine) is eluted in the days immediately following the implant procedure, thereby significantly reducing early stage infections. Click here for more info on Infections.
  • Antimicrobial Surface: Infection is a common problem with all pulse generator implants. Again, through the CoBlast™ technology, EnBIO can offer a surface which exhibits long term antimicrobial properties and which will prevent the build up of bacteria on the surface of the implant, thereby significantly reducing infections. Click here for more info on Infections.
  • Anti Scarring Surface: Cell growth inhibitor (Antiplatelet) drug eluting surfaces - which would minimise scaring tissue building around the device. Click here for more info on Scarring.
